FEEDFORWARD AND FEEDBACK CONTROL OF POSTURE

Alexander S. Aruin, PhD, DSc

Professor of Physical Therapy and Bioengineering

University of Illinois at Chicago, USA

Maintenance of balance is important in our daily life. Any perturbation in the body such as a fast arm or leg movements or sudden translation of the support surface endangers the body’s equilibrium. To minimize the loss of balance, the central nervous system (CNS) uses two types of activities in the trunk and leg muscles. Feedforward or anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) are generated prior to a disturbance to counteract the expected mechanical effects of the perturbation on posture. Feedback or compensatory postural adjustments (CPAs) are initiated by sensory feedback signals and serve as a mechanism to restore balance after a perturbation has already occurred. There is evidence that strong APAs could reduce the need for large CPAs resulting in better balance control. Thus, impaired ability to generate APAs, commonly seen in older adults and individuals with neurological disorders, could be a reason for balance deficits in these populations. We will discuss factors affecting the generation of anticipatory postural adjustments in health and disease, the relationship between anticipatory and compensatory postural adjustments, and the effect of training-related enhancement of APAs on overall postural control.
