The Crafoord Prize is presented by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences since 1982 “to promote international basic research in the disciplines: Astronomy and Mathematics, Geosciences, Biosciences, with particular emphasis on ecology, and Polyarthritis (rheumatoid arthritis)”. In 2008 the Crafoord Prize was presented to an employee of the Institute
together with Edward Witten (Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, USA) for “contributions to mathematics from modern theoretical physics”.
