Jørn Justesen was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1944. He received the M.S. degree in electrical engineering in 1971 and the Dr.Tech. degree in 1975, both from the Technical University of Denmark, Lyngby. From 1971 to 1972, he was with the Institute of Circuit Theory and Telecommunication, Technical University of Denmark. He was a Visiting Lecturer with the University of California, Berkeley, in 1973, and an Associate Professor with Aalborg University, Denmark, from 1974 to 1975. Since 1976, he has been Professor of Communication Theory in the Department of Telecommunication (now Photonics), Technical University of Denmark. His main research interests are algebraic coding theory and constrained codes in one and two dimensions. In fall 1987, he visited the Institute for Problems of Information Transmission, Moscow, and visited the University of Maryland, College Park, in spring 1999. He has worked on several contracts for the European Space Agency. Dr. Justesen received the Browder J. Thompson Prize for the best paper published in any IEEE TRANSACTIONS in 1972 by an author under 30 years old. He was the coauthor of the paper that received the IEEE Information Theory 1991 Best Paper Award. He was Guest Associate Editor for a special issue of the IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON INFORMATION THEORY in 1995, and an Associate Editor for coding theory of the TRANSACTIONS in 2000–2003. In 2004, he was awarded the title of Professor Honoris Causa by the Institute for Problems of Information Transmission, Moscow.
